The Boss

I found this cool little photo history of Bruce Springsteen’s career and thought I’d share.

Looking for a Linux sysadmin with Postfix & Samba skills

I am looking for a sysadmin with experience setting up Postfix (with Kolab / Cyrus / Anomy / SpamAssassin) and Samba. My distro is Gentoo 2004.1. Ideally, you have Gentoo experience already and/or you know Postfix/Samba so well on other distros, you can translate the knowledge to Gentoo easily.

I know my way around the LAMP platform pretty well, but have neither the time nor inclination to learn Postfix and Samba administration. This will be a one-shot, short term contract, focused configuring my email platform so I can manage it from a web UI and setting up file-sharing across my network. If all goes well, I’ll use you for subsequent jobs as my needs grow.

If you are interested or know anyone who fits the bill, email me (linuxadmin_AT_ursastudios_DOHT_com) with a link to your resume. Also, include your rates and/or quote. References will be required before access to the box is granted.

CG-Amazon issues resolved

I’ve been banging away at getting CG-Amazon by David Chait working on my freeky Gentoo server. With Rabbitt’s help, I succeeded yesterday. Turns out, I had PHP compiled without XML-RPC support. No bug in David’s code. Bug on Doug’s box.

I’ve got to say, David has written some tight, fast code. Searches are quick as lightning. Check out the install on my testing site. I see all kinds of possibilities for this app; have written up a few for David; and will help to make them happen if I can.

First up though, I need to get this working on a few of my live sites. Then, I am sure Jerry will want it too.

FeedDemon and WordPress

Speaking of Nick Bradbury, I’ve been checking out FeedDemon, his RSS aggregator. A few weeks ago, I recommended FeedReader. Now, I’ll have to put FeedDemon at the top of the list. Overall, FeedDemon offers a better user interface and seems more stable. The trade off is that it costs $29.95 for a license, whereas FeedReader is free.

To my mind, FeedDemon is like Trillian. It is the best, most stable software in it’s class. The respective authors have priced both products very reasonably. With this in mind, purchasing Trillian and FeedDemon is not only a smart financial decision, but encourages these and other software authors to continue to innovate. So, as soon as my trial ends in 10 days, I’ll be purchasing FeedDemon.

Nick also maintains a FeedDemon Tips blog, which includes links to lots of helpful FeedDemon info. Nick’s blog led me to a great link describing how one can post to WordPress 1.2 from within FeedDemon.

MS-owned Slate.com sing’s the praises of Firefox

The latest version of Firefox, released this Monday, has a more professional look, online help, and a tool that automatically imports your bookmarks, history, site passwords, and other settings from Explorer. Meanwhile, all-conquering Internet Explorer has been stuck in the mud for the past year, as Microsoft stopped delivering new versions. The company now rolls out only an occasional fix as part of its Windows updates.

I found this article by way of Nick Bradbury’s blog. Given Microsoft’s general FUD approach to public relations, it is sort of surprising that this made it to press. I guess the editors at Slate.com still have their journalistic integrity.

Congrats to Victoria, Jerry and Harry

Posted in Las Vegas

Saturday, I attended the AIGA Workshow with my coworkers, several of whom had work up for awards. I am happy to say that Victoria, Jerry and Harry all took home awards. All in all, it was a banner night for MGM Mirage Advertising.

Afterwards, we hit the Hookah Lounge. This was my first experience with the Hookah. It was … pun intended … smokin’. The atmosphere was very mellow; the tobacco was smooth and the company was great.

The evening’s festivities ended at a small after party at a suite at the MGM Grand. The view of the strip was awesome. In many ways, it was better than the view from the Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay.

Overall, it was the most “Vegas” night I’ve had since moving here. Wootie.
