Apple gives Rosa Parks her due

Even to many people who were around in those days, the era of racial segregation seems as remote as the Civil War. You might say that back in the Fifties, American society lived at a different point in evolutionary time.
Rosa Louise Parks

Social historians point to an individual act of defiance on December 1, 1955, as the beginning of the end of that time.

Rosa Parks, the mouse who roared and changed the world, died yesterday. In a typically classy move, Apple gave Parks her due. If ever anyone thought different, it was her. I am sure God has a special place set aside as well.

DIY Audio and Video Production Center

Posted in Cool Ideas, Film

My DIY Audio and Video Production Center would be a storefront in the mall or other location with lots of walk up traffic that would offer sound booths, bluescreen facilities, teleprompter machines, professional lighting, high-end, but easy to use, consumer level cameras, and trained staff members to help run everything. Imagine something like Picture People, but with video and audio recording services offered instead of photography.

Now this is a good idea. I already know of at least 15 people who would avail themselves of this service at least monthly. At the right price point, this would be very lucrative business with strong franchise potential.

Dial-up AOL can bite my ass!

Posted in Technology

Wow. I just helped a family friend fix her computer. After living phat on broadband for the last 5 years, this was my first dial-up experience in a long, long time. And, it was AOL to boot. In short, I wanted to shoot myself.

AOL 9.0 Optimized. That is a euphemism for we suck, we know it and we really love to show it. The dreaded AOL stack and destruction of all other legit connections seems to remain, along with all of the crapware they sneak in the backdoor.

In the idiom of Puerto Rico, my new homeland, “Que cojones!”.

Why Apple should make OSX-Intel (OSX86) Hardware-Agnostic

Steve Jobs says OSX-Intel pirates are going to hell. I, for one, do not think that is the case. I am excited by the move to Intel by Apple. And like John Dvorak, I think this is just the opening volley in Jobs’ plan to sell OSX independent of proprietary hardware. Please, please, please let this be true.

I found an enterprising “how-to” for getting a hacked version of OSX running on Intel now. Soon, I am going to try to do this myself. Will it be a production box? Nope. It will be an experiment. And, I’ll tell you why Jobs should embrace a hardware-agnostic version of OSX-Intel. Because folks like me are constantly building and supporting Windows PCs for our friends and families. If I could wipe their drives of Windows and install OSX, I would. In most cases folks would pay for the OSX license and in those that would not, I would seriously consider buying it for them rather than being forced to support Windows any longer.

Longhorn/Vista is too little too late. Microsoft is not going away … and good for them. Unlike a lot of Alternate OS advocates, I do not think of Microsoft as the evil empire. They have a lot to offer, but the world needs a better defacto standard for an OS. Dvorak is letting the world know as well.
