Barenaked Ladies say music sharing is not piracy

Posted in Politics, Music

Fans who share music are not thieves or pirates. Sharing music has been happening for decades. It is hypocritical for labels to sue fans for something that everyone in the music industry has done him or herself. New technologies may have changed the way that fans share music, but they have not changed the fact that sharing helps artists’ careers.

Canadian Music Creators Coalition: A New Voice
Barenaked Ladies, Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sum 41, Stars, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), Dave Bidini (Rheostatics), Billy Talent, John K. Samson (Weakerthans), Broken Social Scene, Sloan, Andrew Cash and Bob Wiseman (Co-founder Blue Rodeo)

Prominent artists continue to speak out on sharing music. I knew there were reasons to like Canadians other than beer and hockey. :) Checkout their website and detailed position paper.

Is John C. Dvorak a shameless Microsoft shill?

Thus a cloud is rising over OS X and its future unless Apple makes its boldest move ever: turning OS X into an open-source project. That would make OS X versus Linux become the most interesting battle within the computer scene. With all the attention turned in that direction, there would be nothing Microsoft could do to stem a reversal of its fortunes.

Apple Needs to Make OS X Open-Source
John C. Dvorak :: PC Magazine

I listen to Dvorak weekly on the TWIT and Cranky Geeks podcasts. He is, unapologetically, a grumpy bastard. Normally, I find that humorous and ignore the delivery because the content makes sense. That said, his “Apple needs to abandon OSX for Windows XP” diatribe is getting old. Forget the fact that I think he stole my idea for this most recent rant. :D

It all boils down to this. Dvorak is a dinosaur.

He is entrenched in the pre-1990s technology. He has blinders on about what works today and where the industry is headed. His take on most issues, not just Apple, are the journalistic equivalent of playing “Come On Eileen” (Dexy’s Midnight Runners) or “I Ran” (Flock of Seagulls) and declaring it classical music and not bubblegum pop.

Don’t get me wrong. I like those songs, but I enjoy them because they remind me of simpler times. I don’t listen to them because I think the represent the way music is headed today. At best, Dvorak is sadly behind the curve. At worst, he is a shill for vendors afraid to lose market share but too lazy to adapt to the changing landscape.

There is a reason Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Elvis Costello remain relevant while Dexy and the Seagulls are answers to “Trivial Pursuit, The 80’s edition”. Dvorak should take note.

Native Speaker … Cringley expands his XP on OSX Thesis.

Posted in Apple, Alternate OS

I believe that Apple will offer Windows Vista as an option for those big customers who demand it, but I also believe that Apple will offer in OS X 10.5 the ability to run native Windows XP applications with no copy of XP installed on the machine at all. This will be accomplished not by using compatibility middleware like Wine, but rather by Apple implementing the Windows API directly in OS X 10.5.

The more I read Cringley, the more I like the way this man thinks.
