About
I blog elsewhere on more heady topics, but this site is my “brain dump” for all things ephemeral. Art, film, gaming, football, poker, cameras, politics, open source … you name it. This is where I’ll talk about it.
Where does the name “apakuni” come from? In 1990, a good friend and I went on a 3 week hiking excursion to Glacier National Park in Montana. Cutting a very long story very short, I fell ill with intestinal flu during our first hike and was nursed back to health by the mother of the owner of a bed and breakfast called “Apikuni Rose”. It is a place I remember with the fondest of memories, and where I learned some of life’s greatest lessons.
When this crazy thing called the Internet started taking off, Gregor Rothfuss suggested I grab a handle that was unique so I could secure it on all IM platforms. Since HuggyBear and BigPoppa were already taken, I decided to use Apakuni as a fond reminder of my days in Montana. The rest, as they say is history.
Yes. I know I spelled it wrong. The actual spelling is Apikuni, and is the name given to author James Willard Schultz by the Blackfeet tribe of Native Americans. The word means “Spotted Robe”. Schultz’s story is far more interesting than my own. I recommend you give it a read.
On a final, humorous note, “apakuni” is also apparently the Sleestak word for “everyone”. Not familiar with Sleestak? Come on campers, dig deep!!! Remember Land of the Lost? The Sleestaks were the lizard people. And, someone loved the show so much that they have created a language for the Sleestaks! What fun!
Well, I hope you enjoy the blog.
Love, peace and chicken grease,
Apakuni
